Kasbah of Telouet

The Kasbah, architecturally speaking, are imposing buildings with a square base and towers that rise above the height of the perimeter walls. The kasbah are composed of bricks made of clay mixed with water and straw, simply pressed into wooden molds and then sun-dried. Each building is a miniature city: inside there is space for stables, sheepfolds, barns, kitchens, plus private rooms for men and women.

Telouet is a Kasbah along the former route of the caravans from the Sahara over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. The village, at 1800 meters altitude, is dominated by the old residence of the pasha of Marrakech which stands on a hill overlooking the wadi Imarene. Built in the eighteenth century, the kasbah of Telouet is the result of subsequent rehashes that have gradually transformed it into a luxurious fortified palace in which stand out so-called gala rooms showing marble floors, stucco, cedar ceilings and mosaics.
