<description>My husband and I are very glad that I spotted this website. I am fascinated by Islamic Art and Architecture (I have a fascination for antiques, history and archaeology in general). My husband, too, is very interested in anything antique, particularly art and furniture.
However, we have found that information about Islamic Art and its creation appears to be somewhat limited. I suppose that may be because we in the West have for so long ignored and overlooked the contributions made to society by the Islamic culture. It&#039;s such a pity that racial prejudices have for such a long time kept cultures apart, contributing to a lack of shared knowledge and understanding.
My husband and I find Islamic Art utterly beautiful - spellbinding. It deserves to be ranked up alongside great masterpieces of the European artistic and creative world. Surely diversity is both fascinating, and valuable? After all, it would be a dull world if everything was the same! Therefore, it is the imagery and iconography of Islamic Art that makes it so intriguing, as well as the skill of the craftspeople who created it.
My husband and I own examples of what have long been called &quot;Cairo Ware&quot;. However, we also have a box/casket which is something utterly more interesting. For years we have wondered what it is, who made it, and how old it is. WE have sent pictures of it to the British Museum, and are waiting to hear if they can give us any advice.
It is brass, and has been inlaid with silver. The box (with lid) is utterly covered in decoration. This is floral and foliate, with panels that contain figures on horseback, hunting, and mythological creatures. We are not sure what they are, or what they mean. Some of the decoration is chased, and some pierced. The box is very elaborate, and looks like it once had a very large, ornate lock (now missing). The handles are serpent shaped.
WE have searched the internet to try to find items that are similar to it, so that we could better understand OUR box. This is what lead us to find your website.
The items you display are both beautiful, and fascinating. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Elaine and Mr. Kevin Ellis
Lancashire, UK.
